After reading this post, I have a renewed interest in a goal that I set out to accomplish two years ago. Reading has always been a favorite pastime of mine, and reading at least twenty books on that list will be accomplished soon. Looking back, I was so much more optimistic about my future as a MBA grad. Considering I did eventually take classes (which ultimately didn’t transfer) overseas, I was so ambitious about earning the degree vs. gaining valuable experience. One thing I have learned is that life has this funny way of teaching us things…
Well, things are slowing down here (both with the war and my unit) so there is not too much more to report of. I still plan on sitting down and going over my typical day, so stay tuned. This past week I have been on tower duty (basically guarding the perimeter of this base) so I have not done anything too exciting. We (and SGT Kevin, I will just try to use first names) were in the tower and we did not see anything at all out of the ordinary which is of course a good thing. Other than that, things are still the same here.
I am still in the process of applying to take some graduate courses at American Military University (to fill in the core course of the Master’s degree that I am pursuing through Capital University ) and it is very difficult. Not being able to contact people and institutions directly does place somewhat of a strain on myself, but I think everything will work out fine. The military is slated to pay 100% of the education, but it seems that they want me to jump through 10,000 hoops to get there so it is at times frustrating.
In other news I have added another goal to my already ambitious lists (can never have too many goals). I am going to set out to read at least twenty of the books from this list (I already have four) and ten books from the non-fiction list. I guess knowledge is power, and I want to empower myself to the fullest potential.
On the American front, it seems that we are facing very scary times. With the “axis of evil” in the news everyday, I often worry about how long it will be until we launch our next pre-emptive attack on one of these countries. I just pray that our leaders are making the right decisions, I just wish all war could go away. I definitely would like to study more about war (on the theoretical side) just to understand why it becomes necessary, and what is usually resolved (since the policy has moved away from “war” and more towards “police actions”. Oh well, enough rambling for now, better get back to work!

I used to think the only people who created blogs did so because they possessed some sort of exhibitionist streak. They wanted to be seen, wanted to be watched. I thought it was self-serving and gratuitous. Now, I’m bored at 10 oclock on a Wednesday night, and I’m writing a blog. Maybe the people I thought were so self-centered really had nothing better to do than right. Either way, here am I, now I write.
This blog really will not have any sort of agenda, I guess I will write about the things that interest me like: Florida Gator sports, medicine, business, politics, food, gambling, and obscene humor. I really don’t think anyone will read this besides myself and really I am ok with that.
About me, I graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Microbiology and Cell Sciences then moved north to go to medical school. Now, I am a first-year resident in Medicine at a program in the Midwest. After I finish this year, I am supposed to move south as I have matched in Anesthesiology in another program further south. I say that I am supposed to finish a residency in anesthesiology, but really more and more I am thinking about heading to business school. I recently took the GMAT and scored a 710, which I hear is a decent score.
So hear’s the rub, I am the first person in my family to have gone to medical school, the third to finish college. I feel the pressure from my family to continue in medicine, because basically it sounds so much better to say, “My son, the doctor” than it does to say “I have a son, he’s a banker.” Maybe that is just my perception. Who knows. Again, I’m glad I’m the only one reading this, because wow it just isn’t that interesting. I mean, here I am whining, that I cannot decide whether to become an anesthesiologist and make $275k/year for the rest of my life or get an MBA from a good school to work in investment banking giving me a chance at even more lucrative payoffs. Boo hoo. I don’t expect sympathy.
So, that’s the start, if anyone ever sees this, check back sometime to hear some stories about the horrors of intern year, more on my decision to leave medicine, and much more interesting things like the start of college football season, how Franky Muniz killed Dale Earnhardt, and why Jeff Garcia has no friends.

My husband finally opened an IRA account for his retirement. He is sending $50 per paycheck toward his retirement account for now. I am happy for him. I have been bugging him to save for retirement but he never listened to me until now. I know it is only $50 but it is a start. Better a little bit than nothing at all.
My retirement account is now about $32,000. I figure if the amount increases about $15000 a year, in the next 5 years, I’m expecting to get over $100,000 saved in my retirement saving account.
I actually plan on staying on my company for at least another 2 years (until after I graduate from my MBA). They are paying the tuition so I am going to take advantage of that.
I hope I win the lottery tonight. I need it. That money would buy me some happiness.

What went down last time by Seeker on August 16th, 2008 As I stare down the beginning of recruiting, take 2, its probably worth it to take a look at how things went last year.
All Moved In by Seeker on August 23rd, 2008 I woke up at 4:20am, took a 6:30am flight, landed, got a taxi, dropped my bags off at the dorms (studio, really) and then rented a car.
That is a (backwards) view of my very first rejection letter.
A year after I sent my first batch of poems out to a *real* publication I finally received an answer; the answer being a polite and concise “no, thanks.”
It’s exciting. It’s a reminder that I’m at least getting my stuff out there.
I’m going to frame it.
Tomorrow I get to pay various bills in the amount of $800ish dollars.
Why are these the weeks that I always want to shop?
I have $1,000 to pay off on a spring break trip between now and October. I wonder if I should cut my beach vacation with The Boy short to rack up some hours. The frustrated child in me says “Nooooo!! No no no no no no!!!” the adult with a dwindling bank account says, “Yes. Money is good. We like food.”
I’m still deciding whom I’m going to listen to.
And today I found out through the grapevine that in 6ish months my mentor is moving halfway across the world. Which means she will no longer be teaching. Which means that the program that I helped revive from near extinction will no longer have a director. Which means I will probably not be coordinating a conference this March.
Not to mention I’m losing one of my best friends in the process.
I need a drink.*
*or ice cream and SATC. Or just sex. I’m coming up empty on all fronts. Damn it.

Getting the hang of studying again by Seeker on October 1st, 2008 First week down and a fair number to go - most of 'my' new MBA class seem to have settled in OK and most realise that the first week is not a fair representation of what to expect.
Sin duda una de las materias que mas problemas me han traído en esta maestria se llama FINANZAS. A duras penas entendí que los activos es lo que tengo y los pasivos lo que debo y mi patrimonio es lo que me queda de la resta de los dos. Además que es mejor ser rico que pobre y que lo ideal es comprar barato para vender caro. En fin…
Esta foto la tome en una clase pasada donde revisamos los orígenes del “valor presente neto”. Otros “mastercitos” se burlaron cuando la tome porque pensaron que era para estudiar. JODER!
Finalmente entendí que el valor presente depende de la inversión inicial, las inversiones durante la operación, los flujos netos de efectivo, la tasa de descuento y el número de periodos que dure el proyecto incluso a perpetuidad. Todavía estoy tratando de mirar como aplico eso en un paciente.
Creo que las finanzas corporativas son un conjunto de símbolos, letras o números separados entre si por operaciones de suma, resta, multiplicación o división y que los paréntesis se usan para agrupar términos o separar operaciones. Eso si, pueden ser redondos ( ), cuadrados [ ] o en llave { } pero eso depende del profesor.
Por ahora siguiere intentando estudiar el riego financiero por apalancamiento en sectores altamente cíclicos y las diferentes alternativas de financiación como la deuda publica para este viernes. Espero encontrar alguna analogía con la medicina para entender mejor.
