Citizen Kane: A Wonderful Life-Story
Citizen Kane marks several records for me. It is the oldest movie I have ever seen, the first movie I saw as part of a course, the first movie to enter my blog and of course, the first movie where I visited the historical association before I watched the movie.
Citizen Kane is a depiction of William Randolph Hearst’s life. The movie opens with Kane’s last words “Rosebud” on his deathbed. The movie is a pyschological study of why and how Charles Foster Kane’s idealism got corrupted as he grew powerful. Orson Welles has definitely done an excellent job on this biography.
To tell the story in brief, Charlie buys a newspaper “The Inquirer”, initially to deliver the news to its readers honestly. His power increases by leaps and bounds with The Inquirer. His marriage to Emily Norton, the then President’s niece, paves his entry into politics. However, the exposure of his adultery with Susan Alexander by his political rival, leads to an early demise of his political career.
Kane’s Bulldozer attitude results in lack of empathy towards his dear wife, Susan, and he continues to push her towards her career as an Opera singer, despite the terrible reviews she receives and her increasing reluctance to continue. Kane also loses his dearest friend, Leland (or Jedidiah, as he addresses him), to his selfish power.
What was my experience about this movie as a project, you ask? This movie proved to be an enjoyable project for our entire team! However hard I try to be modest, I cannot resist from telling you all about my professor’s remarks about our report — ” “
Well, to say the least, this is the intro our team came up with, in the report. “The film, ‘Citizen Kane,’ is a fictionalized biography of a newspaper magnate, Charles Foster Kane, which documents Kane’s empty pursuit of power. Despite his great material wealth, natural charisma and political connections, Kane falls victim to a series of political missteps, which ultimately leave him unfulfilled, alone and powerless. Through the course of the film, Kane faces an intricate web of political problems created by his personality, behavioral traits and lack of political skill, all of which contribute to the rise and fall of both Kane and his newspaper, the Inquirer. Through this paper, we will analyze elements of Kane’s political successes and failures, as well as reflect on how he and those closest to him could have taken action to prevent the tragic course of events depicted in the film.” I think, now you know why we aced our report!!
My recommendation?? Order it on Netflix/Blockbuster and watch it, you will enjoy the movie.
(And to let you in on the secret about Rosebud, that was Hearst’s nickname for his mom, Pheobe Hearst!)
