During their two years study, they have been challenged to reflect even more deeply because of two events that coincided with the timing of their studies – Harvard Business School’s 100th anniversary and the global financial crisis (both have no direct connections). The school has been rethinking hard about its role in the future of business and societies and how the MBA would continue to be relevant a century from

Who do you think were the top in the list of Most Coveted Recruiters for MBA students in India? In keeping with the times, investment banks are no longer major favourites for employment for MBAs from India’s leading business schools says a recent survey. The Economic Times quotes a survey by Teamlease, Synovate and MBA Universe as saying that Lehman Brothers (ranked 4 last year) and J P Morgan (ranked 11 last year) do not at all now appear in the list of Top 25 Most Coveted Recruiters for 2008.

The survey covered top schools including the IIMs, XLRI, Jamshedpur and the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of management, Mumbai.

The first four slots go to traditional favourites: McKinsey & Company, Hindustan Unilever, Boston Consulting Group and Proctor & Gamble. Despite adverse remarks in some parts of the media, ICICI Bank came in the 5th position. At Rank 6 was the Tata Group ( moving up from Rank 10 last year). The Reliance Group moved smartly to rank 7 from Rank 17 last year.

There is a real danger of an economic slow down in India- affected as we are by events in the US and elsewhere. the rate of growth is expected to stand reduced to 7 to 7.5 % this year. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh however is confident that we will return to a 9 % growth.

In this setting, while jobs may not be created with quite the same frenzy we saw in past years, MBAs from India’s top schools will still have a good range of choices to make. As always, there will continue to be a demand for top talent.

Thinking about waiting out the recession by getting an MBA? A recent Newsweek article may may you think twice. The article, Happy Birthday, Harvard B-School reported on an 18-month study on the state of the M.B.A. conducted by Harvard professors David Garvin and Srikant Datar. They interviewed deans, recruiters, faculty and alumni from several dozen top business schools.

Their conclusions?

At some companies, longer-tenured employees without an M.B.A. face better odds of getting promoted than newcomers who hold the degree, and some employers now dissuade star employees from returning to school for an M.B.A. at all. Recruiters say the M.B.A.s they do hire have learned little about such skills as giving presentations, navigating corporate politics or leading co-workers. “The M.B.A. degree may be at an inflection point,” Garvin says.

The article goes on to say:

In the symposium’s most thoughtful remarks, Civil War historian and Harvard president Drew Faust suggested that B-schools may teach their students to become so focused on competing against colleagues and tallying individual rewards that they suffer “a kind of blindness” to “the fundamental interconnectedness of humankind, of societies and of economies.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of higher business education.

Clearly, in the working world, being able to communicate and lead are two crucial “soft” skills employers seek. Having written about the importance of being connected, I’m intrigued to note the focus on the “fundamental interconnectedness of humankind.” In his book, Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazzi says, “…Community and alliances will rule in the twenty-first century…[success is] dependent on whom you know and how you work with them (291).” He asserts that living a truly connected life is a prerequisite to success. If this is true, it looks like the M.B.A. may not be the path of choice.

Could it be that all we really need to know are the lessons we learn in the sandbox? Is the poem “All I Ever Really Need To Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” turning out to be really true?

What do you think? When do we learn our most important skills – the sand box or the ivory tower?

Check out our GMAT tips below.

GMAT Score: Before you take the test, understand how it’s scored and what score you’ll need to get into your top school.

Build up your floor: Your floor is the level of questions you can consistently answer correctly. Practice easier questions first.

Pay attention to the first questions: Your answers to the first few questions of each section are used to determine your level of difficulty, so take your time on these.

Don’t fill in guesses randomly: This technique actually counts against you, so West.net recommends that you “try to eliminate at least one answer choice before you confirm your response.”

Advice on Test Preparation: Learn how to focus on only certain areas, and don’t over prepare yourself.

Be honest: Admissions directors conduct background checks, so if you lie on your application, you’ll be disqualified immediately.

Pick a backup school: It’s the same rule as college, but even more necessary now, since MBA schools are even more competitive. Have a backup school waiting in the wings in case you don’t get in to your first choice.

Emphasize Your Leadership Skills: Business schools have an invested interested in how well you can demonstrate leadership skills before, during and after you earn your MBA.

Every Contact Counts: Don’t blow off an interview or make a rude phone call. Know that every contact with your business school counts.

Visit the campus: This shows the school how interested you are and gives you a better idea of how you think you’ll fit in.

Prepare adequately for the GMAT: Take practice tests, understand the format, and of course, get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast before the exam!

Tier-II cities like Lucknow, Pune and Coimbatore are driving up the numbers

MUMBAI: The race for the IIMs just got tougher. Applications for the Common Entrance Test (CAT) have soared by 26% this year which means each seat will have 170 contenders. A total of 1,700 seats are up for grabs in the six premier B-schools across the country.

Interestingly, though there has been an overall rise in the number of applicants, it’s Tier-II cities that have spurred the numbers.

A total of 2.9 lakh students will take the CAT this year as compared to 2.3 lakh last year. This year, there are an additional 200 seats too. Besides the IIMs, several other management institutes also use CAT scores for admission.

“We have got around 60,375 applications this year from Delhi and Lucknow centres. Though the applicants have risen by 19% in Delhi, in Lucknow [tier II city], applications have shot up by almost 90% in the past two years. One reason for this could be the increasing popularity of CAT,” says Saji Nair, chairperson (admissions) at IIM Lucknow.

“Many new B-schools have come up in the North and they have also started accepting CAT scores and this could also be a factor that’s driving up the numbers,” adds Nair.
As compared to the 19% in Delhi’s applicants and an 18% hike in Mumbai, the numbers are higher in cities like Noida (25%), Coimbatore (27%), and Gurgaon (21%).
Satish Deodhar, chairperson (Admissions), IIM-Ahmedabad, says applications in Pune have gone up tremendously.

“It has always been an education hub and the awareness about the opportunities after CAT is increasing, which was not there earlier,” he added.

Deodhar added that the rise in Ahmedabad centre (which also comprises Mumbai) is not as much as the Bangalore centre (which comprises Pune). The increase in Ahmedabad centre is only by 18%, whereas the Bangalore centre has seen a rise of 28%.

Some experts also feel that the perception about an MBA is changing for young people in tier II cities. “The increase is all-round. Even applications in Mumbai and Delhi are going up, but for people in tier II cities, an MBA is a passport to success. They were not aware of the avenues that an MBA degree offered earlier,” says Aks Srinivasan of TIME, a coaching institute.

Srinivasan says candidates are moving from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to metros like Mumbai and Delhi only to get trained for CAT. “We are also noticing the same shift in towns like Akola and Aurangabad in Maharashtra,” says Srinivasan.

While increasing awareness is one factor, the global market crash may also be playing a role in the interest in an MBA. “There’s been a rise every year. In 1997, there were just a few thousands appearing for the CAT, while the increase is manifold today. This year, students might be worried about the US meltdown and the fear might be forcing many candidates to acquire an MBA due to job uncertainty in the future,” says Shiva Kumar, director (academics), Career Launcher, an institute which grooms candidates for the CAT.
