Most Coveted Recruiters

Who do you think were the top in the list of Most Coveted Recruiters for MBA students in India? In keeping with the times, investment banks are no longer major favourites for employment for MBAs from India’s leading business schools says a recent survey. The Economic Times quotes a survey by Teamlease, Synovate and MBA Universe as saying that Lehman Brothers (ranked 4 last year) and J P Morgan (ranked 11 last year) do not at all now appear in the list of Top 25 Most Coveted Recruiters for 2008.

The survey covered top schools including the IIMs, XLRI, Jamshedpur and the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of management, Mumbai.

The first four slots go to traditional favourites: McKinsey & Company, Hindustan Unilever, Boston Consulting Group and Proctor & Gamble. Despite adverse remarks in some parts of the media, ICICI Bank came in the 5th position. At Rank 6 was the Tata Group ( moving up from Rank 10 last year). The Reliance Group moved smartly to rank 7 from Rank 17 last year.

There is a real danger of an economic slow down in India- affected as we are by events in the US and elsewhere. the rate of growth is expected to stand reduced to 7 to 7.5 % this year. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh however is confident that we will return to a 9 % growth.

In this setting, while jobs may not be created with quite the same frenzy we saw in past years, MBAs from India’s top schools will still have a good range of choices to make. As always, there will continue to be a demand for top talent.

Thinking About an MBA? You May Want to Think Twice and Listen Hard in Kindergarten

Thinking about waiting out the recession by getting an MBA? A recent Newsweek article may may you think twice. The article, Happy Birthday, Harvard B-School reported on an 18-month study on the state of the M.B.A. conducted by Harvard professors David Garvin and Srikant Datar. They interviewed deans, recruiters, faculty and alumni from several dozen top business schools.

Their conclusions?

At some companies, longer-tenured employees without an M.B.A. face better odds of getting promoted than newcomers who hold the degree, and some employers now dissuade star employees from returning to school for an M.B.A. at all. Recruiters say the M.B.A.s they do hire have learned little about such skills as giving presentations, navigating corporate politics or leading co-workers. “The M.B.A. degree may be at an inflection point,” Garvin says.

The article goes on to say:

In the symposium’s most thoughtful remarks, Civil War historian and Harvard president Drew Faust suggested that B-schools may teach their students to become so focused on competing against colleagues and tallying individual rewards that they suffer “a kind of blindness” to “the fundamental interconnectedness of humankind, of societies and of economies.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of higher business education.

Clearly, in the working world, being able to communicate and lead are two crucial “soft” skills employers seek. Having written about the importance of being connected, I’m intrigued to note the focus on the “fundamental interconnectedness of humankind.” In his book, Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferrazzi says, “…Community and alliances will rule in the twenty-first century…[success is] dependent on whom you know and how you work with them (291).” He asserts that living a truly connected life is a prerequisite to success. If this is true, it looks like the M.B.A. may not be the path of choice.

Could it be that all we really need to know are the lessons we learn in the sandbox? Is the poem “All I Ever Really Need To Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” turning out to be really true?

Your Application

Below are tips for cleaning up your application and making sure it’s error-free.

Make copies: Before marking up the original, make sure you can make copies or print out several editions so that you won’t have to scratch through or white-out your mistakes.
Triple check each question and box: It’s absolutely important that you don’t leave anything blank.
Remember your name: Don’t forget your name and/or signature!

Be honest: Admissions directors conduct background checks, so if you lie on your application, you’ll be disqualified immediately.
Pick a backup school: It’s the same rule as college, but even more necessary now, since MBA schools are even more competitive. Have a backup school waiting in the wings in case you don’t get in to your first choice.
Emphasize Your Leadership Skills: Business schools have an invested interested in how well you can demonstrate leadership skills before, during and after you earn your MBA.
Proactively Address Academic Gaps: Make sure all of your prerequisites and transcripts are in order.
Every Contact Counts: Don’t blow off an interview or make a rude phone call. Know that every contact with your business school counts.
Visit the campus: This shows the school how interested you are and gives you a better idea of how you think you’ll fit in.
Prepare adequately for the GMAT: Take practice tests, understand the format, and of course, get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast before the exam!
